New Dean chosen for College of Engineering
and Science
Clemson University Provost Dori Helms has named Esin Gulari,
Ph.D., as dean for the College of Engineering and Science.
Gulari is a professor of chemical engineering and materials science
at Wayne State University in Detroit. She fills the post of retiring
Dean Thomas Keinath.
Gulari received her B.S. degree from Robert College in Istanbul,
Turkey, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the California Institute
of Technology. She spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the
State University of New York at Stony Brook. She has been a member
of the chemical engineering and materials science (CHEMS) department
faculty in the College of Engineering at Wayne State University
since 1979. She served has chair of the department from 1993 to
2000. She was also the chief technology officer of nanoSEC, a startup
company formed to manufacture and market nanocomposites produced
using supercritical fluid processing.
She is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers,
the 2003 chair for the Council of Chemical Research, and a member
of the executive board of the Committee of the Advancement of Women
Chemists and Chemical Engineers (COACh).
From 2000 to 2004, she served at the National Science Foundation
(NSF) where she was the director of the Chemical and Transport Systems
Division in the Engineering Directorate. From September 2001 to
April 2003, she also served as acting assistant director for the
Engineering Directorate at NSF.
The new dean says she sees tremendous potential for Clemson engineering
and science programs.
“I am very excited to lead an academic unit that brings together
engineering and science disciplines. I am a believer in the Clemson
Top 20 plan. The potential for the college is tremendous for many
exciting and successful paths to the future,” she said.
Clemson Provost Helms said, “Dr. Gulari has great vision and
demonstrates both creativity and clarity of purpose with regard
to her plans for our College of Engineering and Science.”
