New Dean chosen for College of Engineering and Science

Clemson University Provost Dori Helms has named Esin Gulari, Ph.D., as dean for the College of Engineering and Science. Gulari is a professor of chemical engineering and materials science at Wayne State University in Detroit. She fills the post of retiring Dean Thomas Keinath.

Gulari received her B.S. degree from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the California Institute of Technology. She spent two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. She has been a member of the chemical engineering and materials science (CHEMS) department faculty in the College of Engineering at Wayne State University since 1979. She served has chair of the department from 1993 to 2000. She was also the chief technology officer of nanoSEC, a startup company formed to manufacture and market nanocomposites produced using supercritical fluid processing.

She is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the 2003 chair for the Council of Chemical Research, and a member of the executive board of the Committee of the Advancement of Women Chemists and Chemical Engineers (COACh).

From 2000 to 2004, she served at the National Science Foundation (NSF) where she was the director of the Chemical and Transport Systems Division in the Engineering Directorate. From September 2001 to April 2003, she also served as acting assistant director for the Engineering Directorate at NSF.

The new dean says she sees tremendous potential for Clemson engineering and science programs.

“I am very excited to lead an academic unit that brings together engineering and science disciplines. I am a believer in the Clemson Top 20 plan. The potential for the college is tremendous for many exciting and successful paths to the future,” she said.

Clemson Provost Helms said, “Dr. Gulari has great vision and demonstrates both creativity and clarity of purpose with regard to her plans for our College of Engineering and Science.”
