College of Engineering and Science

On a musical note

Clemson’s College of Engineering and Science has received the donation of a large electronic organ built in the early 1970’s by its owner, William J. Park, Sr. (B.S. Hort. ‘48). Park was CEO of George W. Park Seed Co. until 1990, and remained as chairman of the board until his retirement in 1995.

The console and the bench were entirely handcrafted from solid walnut and walnut veneer plywood. With funding from the Clemson Creative Inquiry Initiative, the organ has been relocated to the balcony of room 100 in Holtzendorff Hall. Room 100 is the old theater, which is now serving as a lecture hall for general engineering. Prior to the relocation of the instrument, the organ was approximately 90% operational. Now that is resting in its new home, the instrument will be reconnected, debugged, and repaired as necessary. Following the initial renovation, William J. Park, Jr., associate professor in general engineering, will use the instrument as a test-bed for his classes.
