AryaProfessor Dev P. Arya, chemistry, is slated to receive this year’s Horace S. Isbell Award in Carbohydrate Chemistry this August at the 2007 American Chemical Society National Meeting in Boston. This prestigious distinction acknowledges excellence in, and promise of, continued quality of contribution to research in carbohydrate chemistry by a young chemist. The award was created in 1987 and Arya is the first Clemson University chemistry faculty member to whom it has been awarded. Professor Arya’s research activities focus on nucleic acid therapeutics and synthesis of small molecule carbohydrate mimetics.  He joined the Clemson faculty in 1999 after spending his postdoctoral years in the labs of Professor T. C. Bruice (UC Santa Barbara).  Arya is a recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2002).

JaliliNader Jalili has received the Faculty Award from the Graduate Student Government. This award recognizes the efforts and achievements in teaching of Clemson University faculty who are committed to the excellence and success of graduate students. Its purpose is to honor faculty who have served as teachers, advisors, mentors, and friends to the graduate student population.

Vaughn recognized for his contributions to the nonwovens industry

Edward A. Vaughn, professor emeritus in Clemson’s School of Materials Science and Engineering, received  the prestigious IDEA07 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Nonwovens & Disposables Association (INDA).  INDA is the trade association representing the nonwoven fabrics industry since 1968. Vaughn,
who helped guide the nonwovens industry through its formative years and into today’s vital global business, was recognized for his outstanding contributions at the IDEA07 International Conference & Exposition.

FigliolaRichard Figliola, professor of mechanical engineering and bioengineering, has received a special acclamation from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in recognition of his contributions leading to the development and publication of ANSI/ASME PTC 19.1-2005 “Test Uncertainty.” In presenting the Certificate of Acclamation, ASME also cites this new American National Standard as being a significant milestone in the systematic development of engineering uncertainty predictions. Figliola serves on the ASME Codes and Standards Committee charged with maintaining the engineering test uncertainty standard and is one of a small group of individuals involved in maintaining this standard.

CooperProfessor Melanie Cooper is being inducted as a fellow of the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science).  This prestigious honor is bestowed upon members by their peers.  Fellows are recognized for meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications.  Cooper is nominated in recognition of her contributions to curriculum development and research on teaching and learning in introductory chemistry courses.

ZumbrunnenCongratulations go to David Zumbrunnen, Warren H. Owen Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering, on being elected an ASME Fellow. The Fellow grade recognizes exceptional engineering achievements and contributions to the profession. Zumbrunnen’s work in chaotic advection applied to the forming of polymer blends and composites has received extensive coverage nationally and internationally. He has several patents that are generating very strong interest from the plastics industry.

EchegoyenThe college proudly congratulates Professor Luis Echegoyen for being awarded the 2007 Charles H. Herty Medal. This award, presented annually by the Georgia section of the American Chemical Society, recognizes the work and service of outstanding chemists. Echegoyen, former department chair and professor of chemistry at Clemson, is currently serving a two-year appointment as chemistry division director with the National Science Foundation.

College Faculty Awards
Each Spring, the College of Engineering and Science honors outstanding faculty with several awards that recognize excellence in teaching and research.

PenningtonProfessor Bill Pennington of the Chemistry Department has been honored with the Class of 1940 Douglas W. Bradbury Award.  This award is given to a faculty member who has made outstanding contributions to the Calhoun Honors College.  As evidenced by his long-term commitment to the Honors Program and recommendations from students, faculty, and administrators, he is a most deserving recipient of this award.  The award was presented to him at the general faculty meeting on Thursday, May 10.  He will also be recognized at the Spring Honors Awards Ceremony for Calhoun College Honors graduates on the same date.

DesMarteauDarryl DesMarteau, endowed chair in chemistry, received the 2007 Faculty Mentoring Award, which recognizes the importance of peer mentoring to the ultimate career success of junior faculty and to the enhancement of the college as a whole. DesMarteau has been a true guide and mentor to many of the faculty within his department.

HussonThe Murray Stokely Award is given in recognition of a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in teaching engineering at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. Over the past several years, Scott Husson, associate professor in chemical and biomolecular engineering, has taught five different courses, taken on the role as AIChE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) student chapter advisor, and added the responsibility of undergraduate coordinator for the department.

JaliliDawsonThe college established a new honor this year called the Collaboration Award, which recognizes a team of two or more faculty that has demonstrated exemplary and synergistic collaboration in research and/or teaching and has made notable contributions to the College. This year’s team has been doing joint research in the area of nanomaterials and mechatronic-based nanomanufacturing since 2000. They have worked together to establish the Center for Intelligent Nano and Microsystems (CINAM). The efforts of this team are a good example of a package that is more valuable than the sum of the parts. The recipients of the first annual Collaboration Award are Nader Jalili, associate professor of mechanical engineering and Darren Dawson, professor of electrical and computer engineering.

HwuThe Faculty Achievement in the Sciences Award is given to a faculty member in recognition of high achievement during the preceding year, including accomplishments, distinctions, and awards within the past three years. Shiou-Jyh Hwu, professor and interim department chair of chemistry, is the 2007 Faculty Achievement in the Sciences recipient.

GrujicicThe McQueen Quattlebaum Award goes to a faculty member in recognition of high achievement in relation to the engineering discipline during the preceding year, including accomplishments, distinctions, and awards within the past three years. This year’s recipient is an exemplary individual who through his remarkable intellect continues to amaze his department as well as the college. The 2007 McQueen Quattlebaum Award winner is Mica Grujicic, professor of mechanical engineering.

Lordes EchegoyenThe Award of Excellence in Teaching in the Sciences recognizes outstanding effort and accomplishment among the college’s science faculty. This year’s recipient has been described as a dedicated and effective teacher. She has the ability to entertain, engage, and inform students all at the same time. Lourdes Echegoyen, lecturer in the department of chemistry was this year’s honoree.

SkaarThe Byars Prize for Excellence in Teaching award is in recognition of outstanding teaching of engineering fundamentals. This faculty member has been described as having a superb ability to translate the fundamentals of science and engineering concepts. The recipient of the 2007 Byars Prize Award for Excellence in Teaching is Eric Skaar, associate professor in materials science and engineering.
