Serita Acker, director of the College’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program has received a grant from the Engineering Information Foundation to further publication of her book, Math, Science and Engineering: It’s a Girl Thing.
Young girls often do not have a clear understanding of science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) majors unless someone in their family has served as a role model. The purpose of the book is to provide early exposure to the STEM fields. The target audience is 6-7th graders.
“Girls usually think of engineering, science, and math as boring, and do not understand how these disciplines impact their everyday lives,” explains Acker. “My goal is to help young women see engineering, science, and math as traditional fields of study,” says Acker.
In the U.S., only 10 percent of those working in engineering are female. On college campuses, women are generally in the majority, but only 20% or less are enrolled in STEM fields.

Math, Science and Engineering: It’s a Girl Thing is a new book that introduces young women to science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.
