From the Dean
As Earnest goes to press, I am celebrating my first anniversary as Dean of the College of Engineering and Science. The old axiom about time flying when you’re having fun must be true because these past twelve months have certainly flown by, and it has indeed been fun.

As many of you have heard, Clemson is about to undertake a rather aggressive infrastructure improvement initiative. The CoES will be a vital part of that effort. Renovations are taking place in Earle Hall, and ground will be broken soon for a much-needed addition to Rhodes Hall. Development of funding strategies and business plans are also under way for an addition to Hunter Hall and a new nanotechnology/engineering building. There’s a sense of excitement and anticipation in the air.
Our excitement, though, is not just about infrastructure improvement. Clemson presented Endowed Chair Medallions to two of our distinguished engineering and science faculty members this Spring. One went to Todd H. Hubing, faculty member of the department of electrical and computer engineering, for holding the Michelin Endowed Chair in Vehicular Electronic Systems Integration. The other went to John C. Ziegert, faculty member of the department of mechanical engineering, for holding the Timken Endowed Chair in Automotive Design and Development. The program was made possible by the South Carolina Legislature’s Research Centers of Economic Excellence Endowed Chairs initiative.
I am pleased to call your attention to the article on this page concerning Stephen Creager, who was recently named chair of the chemistry department. Stephen has been a faculty member here since 1995, and brings a wealth of experience to the post. He has some exciting ideas and plans for the department.
We’re also celebrating the outstanding achievements of alumni, faculty and staff, and students. There are also updates about some of the important research going on in the college, and a feature about our newest inductees into the Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers and Scientists.
Finally, I’d like to offer my personal congratulations to Dr. Linville G. Rich, who has been honored by The Water Environment Association of South Carolina with an endowed fellowship. His contributions to the college and environmental engineering, in particular, have been invaluable.
As always, we love to hear from our alumni, so drop us a note or give us a call!
