Speakers

The original installation had about three dozen individual loudspeakers in a variety of enclosures. Many of the speakers are now unusable - the most common problem being deterioration of the mounting ring between the speaker cone and the metal frame. In addition, most of the enclosures are not really suitable for use, having been designed specifically to fit in the limited space of a private residence. We have made a detailed inventory of which drivers are still in acceptable working order, and are in the process of designing new enclosures, including crossover networks where necessary. Unfortunately, speaker enclosure design evidently still remains amongst the "Black Arts" (similar to, but not as severe as, voicing pipes) - there are some tried and true designs, but it really takes experience to develop a "feel" for it.

Prototype enclosure for a 12" woofer, not quite completed, showing the internal batting (to absorb acoustical energy inside the box) and the wire that leads to the external connection terminal on the back. The box itself is made from 3/4 inch MDF. This box will almost certainly eventually be used for 16' pedal. (For the 32' pedal, we'll probably go to a larger driver - 15" or even 18".)
