South Carolina Studies Program - Unit Lessons
Welcome to the 8th Grade Studies Program! Listed below are the thematic
units available in the program. Each unit has been designed to utilize
skills in Algebra, Pre-Algebra, Language Arts, Science and Social
Studies that meet the South Carolina Academic Standards. Click on the
Units below to access the lesson plans and materials list for each
subject within that unit.
Unit 1- SC General Overview
These lessons cover a broad range of information
about South Carolina. Featured items are George Washington's tour
through South Carolina.
Unit 2 - Folklore and Folk Art
These lessons
take a look at the culture of the Blue Ridge Mountains of South
Carolina. Featured concepts are Irish ballads and Native American
folklore.
Unit 3 - Battlefields and Canals
This unit will
explore the historical battlefields and canal construction near the
South Carolina piedmont. Featured topics are Kings Mountain and
Santee-Cooper.
Unit 4 - Mill Villages
These lessons feature mill villages and their impact on our state. Featured locations are in Columbia and Graniteville.
Unit 5 - Mining and Minerals
This unit will help uncover the many rich resources found in South Carolina. Featured items are gold deposits and kaolin mining.
Unit 6 - Pirates of the Coastal Zone
These lessons examine the lives of pirates in South Carolina, their impact and a look at modern pirateering.
