The Highlands-Cashier area in southwest North Carolina is renowned for its spectacular mountain scenery, high land prices and large cliff faces. Cashiers Valley and Sapphire Valley has been referred to by rock climbers as the “ Yosemite of the East”. Several 1000+ foot cliffs that soar above the valley floors are found within a few miles of each other. In this years trip we will examine the geologic forces resposible for the rock formations that make up these cliffs and visit some of the abandoned mines that form part of the rich tapestry of this area. The name for Saphire Valley comes from the sapphires that were once mined in this area. That mine site is now a golf course. We will also visit mined pegmatite and ultra-mafic bodies. The April 1st and 3rd trips are identical in nature. Upon registering, you will receive more information via email as well as updates about weather conditions the week before the trip. Please meet at the south end of the Madren Center parking lot at 7:30 am -- look for the white vans. Transportation and lunch are provided. We plan to be back in Clemson by 5:30 pm. If you want to meet us in the mountains, we will meet at the Episcopal Church a few miles south of Cashiers and opposite High Hampton resort. From there everyone will travel in vans. You may want to bring your anti-nausea medicine for the curvy roads. |
