Introduction

The purpose of this note is to show how to share Firefox 3 bookmarks and Thunderbird 2 and Sunbird Calendar 0.9 default directories under Windows XP and Linux.

Firefox 3

Your Windows XP bookmarks can be shared with Linux.

  cd ~/.mozilla/firefox/0ae43vbq.default
  ln -s /media/drive-D/profile.cu/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/507d9r04.default/places.sqlite places.sqlite

Comments: Firefox 3 stores bookmarks in the database file places.sqlite. The directory 0ae43vbq.default is created when Firefox 3 is installed under Linux, while the directory 507d9r04.default is created when Firefox 3 is installed under Windows XP. These directory names are randomly generated. I have installed Windows in a C partition and user data in a D partition. The corresponds fstab entries for mounting these partitions under Linux are

  /dev/sda1 /media/drive-C ntfs defaults,uid=500,gid=500,umask=0022 0 0
  /dev/sda2 /media/drive-D ntfs defaults,uid=500,gid=500,umask=0022 0 0

Symbolically linking the default directories leads to issues when updates are done so only bookmarks are shared.

Thunderbird 2

Your Windows XP default directory can be shared with Linux.

  cd ~/.thunderbird
  mv xexz3f7v.default xexz3f7v.default_orig
  ln -s /media/drive-D/profile.cu/Application Data/Thunderbird/Profiles/gmbdpxf5.default xexz3f7v.default

Comments: The directory xexz3f7v.default is created when Thunderbird 2 is installed under Linux, while the directory gmbdpxf5.default is created when Thunderbird 2 is installed under Windows XP. These directory names are randomly generated.

Sunbird Calendar 0.9

Your Windows XP default directory can be shared with Linux.

  cd ~/.mozilla/sunbird
  mv edkhy5pu.default edkhy5pu.default_orig
  ln -s /media/drive-D/profile.cu/Application Data/Mozilla/Sunbird/Profiles/yhbbh1n5.default edkhy5pu.default

Comments: The directory edkhy5pu.default is created when Sunbird Calendar 0.9 is installed under Linux, while the directory yhbbh1n5.default is created when Sunbird Calendar 0.9 is installed under Windows XP. These directory names are randomly generated.
