Automotive Engineering Graduate Studies Information

The Graduate Program in Automotive Engineering is offered through the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University. It emphasizes systems integration and product realization in an interdisciplinary fashion. The thrust of the program is the integration of technical areas in design and development, manufacturing, and electronics, with leadership, innovation management, policy/regulation in a global economy. The University offers courses of study leading to the M.S. and the Ph.D. degrees. The automobile is used as a platform for an intensive hands-on educational experience. All participants in this program are expected to gain proficiency in a foreign language and spend a minimum of 6 months overseas as part of an international internship in the automotive sector. Graduates of this program will be highly marketable in both the automotive Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and automotive supplier sectors. The Automotive Engineering program is located on Clemson's new International Center for Automotive Research (CUICAR) campus in Greenville South Carolina, near research and development centers of several of Clemson's industrial partners.

    FINANCIAL AID
After being accepted, students may be offered support through fellowships or as graduate research assistants (GRA), graduate lab assistants or teaching assistants (GLA). A GRA is hired by a professor to work on that professor's research project and assist the professor in related teaching duties. A GLA is hired to work as a lab instructor or lecturer. Graders are occasionally hired during each semester to help instructors in the evaluation of student work. Students with assistantships enroll for 12 hours each semester (typically three courses in addition to credit received for research). Due to the nature of the Automotive Engineering Graduate Program, assistantships are typically available only for PhD students.

    APPLYING
Applicants may apply on the Web http://www.grad.clemson.edu/p_apply.html. The Master's in Automotive engineering program will accept its first students for the fall 2007 semester. PhD applications are accepted for Fall and Spring semesters starting immediately. Application packages from U.S. citizens should be submitted at least four weeks prior to registration. International student application packages must be completed by May 1 and October 1 for registration in the fall and spring semesters, respectively.
