CHAIR
Clemson University
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Clemson University invites applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Department has two degree granting programs, one in mechanical engineering (B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.), and one in automotive engineering (M.S. and Ph.D.) and has 34 tenure track faculty all actively involved in teaching, research, and service, as well as several emeritus professors, lecturers and research faculty. Many members of the faculty are known nationally and internationally. Included in the faculty ranks are seven ASME Fellows, one SME Fellow, one AAAS Fellow, two Presidential Faculty Fellows, five NSF CAREER awardees, one NSF PECASE awardee, one member of the European Academy of Engineering, and 10 associate editors/members of the editorial boards of national/international journals. The department holds three of the largest endowed chairs in the country -- each valued at $10 million. The department has research facilities comprising a total of 195,000 square feet on two campuses: 105,000 square feet on the main campus in Clemson, SC and, 90,000 square feet at the Carroll A. Campbell Jr. Graduate Engineering Center (CGEC) in the recently developed Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) in Greenville, SC. Clemson University is a public, land-grant institution located along the thriving I-85 business corridor centered between Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC.
The Department seeks a chair with a strong background in scholarship, a proven track-record in obtaining federal, state and industry funding, a commitment to mentoring junior faculty, demonstrated excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching, and a seasoned leadership experience. Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering or closely related discipline. Candidates for the position must have a proven record of professional and academic leadership, a distinguished national and international reputation in research, and qualifications for tenure at the full professor rank.
The main Clemson University campus is located in Clemson, SC, an idyllic college town located within two hours of both Atlanta and Charlotte. Greenville, SC, where CGEC is located, is forty-five minutes from the Clemson campus, has a greater metropolitan population of approximately 600,000, an international airport, a symphony orchestra and an attractive downtown. Clemson University is currently ranked as the 22nd best public university by U.S. News and World Report. The Department of Mechanical Engineering has 560 undergraduate students and 250 graduate students, and a total university student population of approximately 18,000. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is part of a tightly integrated College of Engineering and Science that has total research expenditures of approximately $40 million among all departments.
The search will continue until the position is filled; however, to receive full consideration, applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, five references, and a statement of their vision of the role of the chair in an academic department by December 1, 2009.
