On a positive note, I thought I'd pass on that things are going well
here at Hanford. I will admit that if you go to my senior management
and say the name "Deming" to them, they likely will say "Who?". Or they
might know him for the Red Bead Experiment, which I've gotten a lot of
mileage on here. I've done the Experiment for more than 2,500 people in
the past 10 years. I've gone from my first introduction with a Fluor
manager as "Steve, we don't know why Westinghouse employed a
statistician, Fluor doesn't do statistics" to making or overseeing more
than 2,200 charts (SPC and Pareto) per month, and have reached a peak of
3,197 charts and files (including safety inspection record processing)
in July 2007. Fluor is using the Deming methodology I use as a
differentiator on contract proposals. And we've gotten results in
operations, quality, and safety.I am going with our Executive Vice
President and VP of EHS&Q to the Washington State Governor's Industrial
Safety conference to speak at the end of this month. In the past two
years, I've made more than 40 presentations to professional societies,
written articles for ASQ and ASSE, and also done some independent
consulting. One article is at
http://www.asq.org/pub/qualityprogress/past/0905/qp0905prevette.pdf.
University of Washington had me come in in June 2007 to give a two day
training.
If any one is interested, I am providing a public two day training
session on October 29 and 30 in Richland WA - see
http://www.asq614.org/Stats.pdf. All of the materials were made for the
US Government, so there is no copyright issues, and all of my power
points for the two days (at least the initial version) are stored here -
http://www.hanford.gov/rl/?page=1156&parent=1144. I'm available to hit
the road with the materials.
Hopefully, you do not see this as bragging, I am simply excited that the
last several years have gone well, and have been well paying. I'm
trying to live to Dr. Deming's advice in The New Economics:
A person, once transformed, will
* Set an example
* Be a good listener, but will not compromise
* Continually teach other people
* Help people away from their current practices and beliefs and
move into the new philosophy without a feeling of guilt about the past
