Jim talked recently about the DEN operating on 3 different levels and how certain levels seem to appeal more to certain groups. I read all this stuff, agree with much of it and try to learn from it. The difficulty I am having of late is trying to get all being discussed into my head and keeping it there. I think the issue may be lack of balance on the 3 different levels. When I took the 4 day seminar, it seems to me that people sometimes asked Dr. Deming very philosophical questions and then he would just kind of ignore and ask them about quality problems they were trying to solve. He would ask them for data and he would put it on the overhead with the grease pencil or dry erase and then begin drawing graphs, etc.
Maybe we need a better balance of data and charts and graphs with our discussion on the higher levels.

Note: My apologies to all as I do not currently have access to previous messages and cannot recall precisely how Jim titled the 3 levels.

Bill Cooper's post today provides an effective close to the thread on
Operational Definitions.
I also have a volunteer that said he would summarize the thread, so we
can put this one to bed.
A number of folks have lamented our repeating discussions over time.
The truth is the list is 99% democratic and whatever topic energy has
energy around it will get discussed.
The 1% that is not democratic is my occasional intervention as
moderator to close a thread that has run its course so we can move on
to more productive discussions.
Thanks for your cooperation.
