Activities Report (April 2005 to March 2006)

SCCMS, South Carolina's Coalition for Mathematics and Science brings together advocates from business/industry, education, government and community organizations to catalyze action in five domains identified as key paths to improving science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.

ADVOCACY - We serve as an active proponent for excellence in STEM education.

•  State STEM Summit : April 14-15, 2005 R [$26,988 Grant from NASA/US Dept. of Education via NASSMC]

•  New SCCMS Partner - Fluor Corporation

•  Affiliations - National Alliance of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions (NASSMC), SC Association of Not for Profit Organizations (SCANPO), Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - We partner with organizations pursuing goals consistent with our vision for STEM education to deliver professional development designed to improve student achievement.

•  Alternative Model K-5 Mathematics Coach in Marion School District #7 [$39,200 Grant from SC Dept. of Education]

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS SUPPORT - We support the availability and effective use of exemplary curricula and instructional materials in every school in South Carolina .

•  Distribution of ACT preparation materials to all SC middle schools [$483,958 Grant from SC Dept. of Education]

•  Mini-Grant [$1,000] support for SC team participation in Association of Science Materials Center's Next Step Institute: October 19-22, 2005

INNOVATION - We identify, design and disseminate promising instructional tools and techniques to schools in South Carolina and beyond.

•  Designing middle school instructional coaching initiative ( iCoach ) in partnership with SC Mathematics & Science Unit PPT WL [~$1.6 million Anticipated grant from SC Dept. of Education] Program to begin in June of 2006.

•  Exploring partnership with National Science Teachers Association's Science Program Improvement Review (SPIR) and Professional Development Institute (PDI)

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION - We seek continual improvement in our own and other programs' abilities to impact student achievement.

•  No work in progress to date.
