Asphalt Roadway Technician's
Certification
Course
Description:
The Asphalt Roadway
Technician Course is intended to assure competency in proper
testing procedures and everyday field tasks. The participants
are required to perform mathematical problems that occur while
working as a roadway technician. The learning experience is
dependent on the level of prior experience and may differ
between participants. However, the goal is the same; to establish
a consistent understanding of roadway inspection.
The instructors for the classes are made
up of knowledgeable asphalt industry consultants, equipment
manufacturers, academia, contractors and SCDOT representatives.
Each participant is responsible for solving various roadway
problems. Some sample problems may deal with tack rate,
compaction, asphalt mix rate, and control strips. Participants
are encouraged to work as a team, however, the students
are responsible for solving problems individually on the
written examination. The solutions for all problems are
worked throughout, and discussed fully in the classroom.
Participants are required to take and successfully pass
a written exam with a score of 80% or higher to complete
the course.

Individuals that complete the course will
be certified to perform Asphalt Roadway Technician duties
on SCDOT projects. Some of the responsibilities of an Asphalt
Roadway Technician are as follows:
- Establish and monitor roller patterns
- Monitor ambient air temperature
- Monitor mat temperature
- Calculate tack rate and dilution rate
- Calculate lay down rate
- Monitor compaction with nuclear gauge

The cost of this class
will be $525.00 per person. This will cover three lunches,
SC DOT forms, testing procedures, and manuals. |

Nuclear Gauge certification (SCDOT
employees only) and six months field experience
form (all attendees). |

maximum of fifty (50) students. |
Attendance:

A candidate's absence from
any class session may disqualify that person from being
eligible to take the Final Exam. |

- 24 ASPHALT ROADWAY TECHNICIAN COURSE IN COLUMBIA:
Comfort Suites of Columbia, 1540 Daulton Drive,

of Columbia for this course. To ensure your group-rate
registration of $79/night plus tax (SC State employees
are tax exempt, be sure to specify "DOT Asphalt
Group" when making your reservation. You will need
to speak with someone at the reservation desk in order
to get this special rate. If you get a recording, please

There is a complimentary deluxe breakfast and wireless
internet included in this room rate. Please register
separately with the hotel.
For all other Asphalt Roadway Technician courses, a
block of rooms is being held at the Comfort
Inn for this course. To ensure your group-rate registration,
be sure to specify "Asphalt Course" and the
"date" of your arrival when you register.

At
the start of each course, all course attendees will
be
asked to read and sign the following form called
"Application for SCDOT Technician Certification".
If you answer "yes" to Question #2 on this
form, your certification will be subject to approval
by the SCDOT Technician Certification Board even if
you pass the written exam.
