Level 2S Superpave
Mix Design Certification
Course
Description:
The participants of this course must be certified
at Level 1. The mix design course is intended to cover the concepts
of Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and Superpave mix
design. SCDOT and AASHTO design procedures are discussed in the
course. The class is divided into two sections, a laboratory session
and a classroom session. The majority of the time is spent at
the laboratory applying testing procedures and design techniques
discussed in the classroom. The class is separated into groups,
with each group being responsible for making their own Superpave
mix design. Additional Superpave aggregate tests are performed
in the laboratory to assure aggregate properties meet SHRP guidelines.

HMA Mix Design Technicians will
be responsible for designing Superpave mixes in a certified
Superpave mix design laboratory. The laboratory must meet
SC-T-82 and SC-T-82B, which is to be certified by an authorized
SCDOT official. The mix designs will then submitted to the
Department’s Mix Design Unit for approval. After mix
designs have been approved, the Level 2S technician will then
be responsible for submitting the proper forms (Lab Form 310)
to specify which mix they would like to be approved for specific
projects.

The cost of this
class will be $1250.00 per person. This will cover
five lunches, SC DOT forms, testing procedures,
and manuals. |

Each class will have
a maximum of twelve (12) students. |
Attendance:

A candidate's absence
from any class session may disqualify that person
from being eligible to take the Final Exam. |

A block of rooms
is being held at the Comfort
Inn for this course. To ensure your group-rate
registration, be sure to specify "Asphalt
Course" and the "date" of your
arrival when you register. The telephone number
for the Comfort is 864-653-3600. The cost is $70.00
(single or double) plus tax. South Carolina state
employees are tax exempt. There is a complimentary
continental breakfast included in this cost.

If you answer "yes" to Question #2
on this form, your certification will be subject
to approval by the SCDOT Technician Certification
