elcome to the world
of SE MAPS, an interdisciplinary science curriculum project involving eight
southeastern states and incorporating aerial photography, satellite imagery,
topographic and special-purpose maps, and other remotely sensed data in
a series of investigative hands-on activities designed for middle school
students. Instructional materials currently under development include a
classroom set of large laminated lithographs, two CD-ROMs, and a Teaching
Manual.
All State Coordinators are invited to begin sending immediately to Burgess Howell any draft versions of study area narratives and student activity questions which are ready for review and comment. Such materials should be sent in electronic format if at all possible. If you have suggestions for other items that should be included on the SE MAPS web page, please contact Burgess Howell or the Clemson project office.

The Florida NAPP order was only partially filled by the USGS and they apparently misplaced the original order. As a result, the remaining images have had to be re-ordered and a delivery date is uncertain at this time. Historic air photos of the peninsular Florida activity sites have not been ordered because the NAPP images are required to exactly match image scale and coverage. Some of the historic sketches of the South Florida region will be sent to Burgess this month for scanning.
Slow, yet solid progress is being made on the activity
writing for the Florida peninsula study areas. The South Florida rough
draft is reported to be near complete. Activity writing is difficult without
being able to refer to specific image features, however, resources such
as topographic maps, DOQs and posters are temporarily being used. We anticipate
activity writing to get back on schedule once all images are received.
Until then, the teams will continue to improvise using available imagery.
Pilot testing for the Woodville Karst Plain study area should be able to
begin in Spring, 1998 or the SE MAPS Project Office for this information.
