Clemson University Smart Structures and NEMS Laboratory was formed in early 2002 with a major funding from National Science Foundation and Department of Commerce emphasizing on the design and development of next-generation macroscopic actuators and sensors comprised of functional nanomaterials (e.g., nanotubes). Over the past couple of years, our research group has focused on a variety of research areas such as dynamics and control of MEMS and NEMS, nanotube-based sensors and actuators, micro- and nano-positioning systems with application to precision manufacturing and scanning probe microscopy and nanomechanical cantilever sensors. Our emphasis in all these areas has always been on dynamic modeling and control at the "nanoscale" and the consequent challenges due to added modeling uncertainties and nonlinearities at this scale.
