Darwin Server (QuickTime Open Source)
The College of Engineering and Science is currently running Darwin Streaming Server 4.1.1 under Red Hat Linux 7.1 on its WebCT development server. Darwin Streaming Server is the open source release of the QuickTime Streaming Server product. This test server is also currently running WebCT 3.6 and an evaluation copy of the RealNetworks Helix Universal Server 9.0 Basic. If you would like to use the Darwin or Helix servers, contact Bill Moss (bmoss@clemson.edu). The Darwin server users ports 555 and 7071, while the Helix server users ports 554 and 7070.
Before QuickTime movies can be streamed from this server they must be hinted using QuickTime Player Pro which currently is a $29.99 upgrade to the free QuickTime Player. These players are available for PC and Mac.
Here is a sample hinted movie included with the Darwin Streaming Server. The total bitrate is 171 Kbps which means in will play OK over the campus network but not over a 28.8 modem.
