Textbook: E. R. Scheinerman, Mathematics: A Discrete Introduction,Brooks/Cole, 2000 (required).

Objectives: To give the student a background in abstraction, notation, and critical thinking in discrete mathematics.

Grading Policy:

45% Two Hour Exams, in class, closed book

20% Weekly Quizzes

35% Final Exam (comprehensive, no exemptions)

No make-up tests will be given for unexcused absences. Tests will be graded on the basis of the work shown, and not on the answer alone.

Homework assignments will be given weekly for each class, as well as posted on the class home page. Students are expected to complete the assigned problems, and weekly quizzes will be directly related to the assigned problems. Homework will not be collected.

The final exam will be given at the time published in the university exam schedule (Friday December 15, 8:00–11:00)

Grading Scale:

A = 90+

B = 80-89

C = 70-79

D = 60-69

F = 59-

Class Attendance: Students are expected to attend class regularly and punctually. Excessive absences may cause a student to be dropped from the course.

Course Contents: Portions of Chapters 1–5, 7, 8, 10 of Scheinerman. Topics include methods of proof, logic, sets, counting, functions, and relations as well as applications to computer and information sciences.
