Early Toadvine Appearances in the Record Books

Indirect evidence of Nicholas Toadvine arriving

Liber A15 Land Office Records, Annapolis, MD
1675, June 8: William Breton proved his right to 315 acres of land for transporting himself, Sarah his wife, William his son, Nicholas Toadvane, William Gordy, Edward Prince, and Mary Neale in the Province to inhabit.

Bachelor of Bristol

Though not a direct appearance, the ship (Bachelor arrived in Maryland in 1674) may be the one that transported Nicholas Toadvine to America. Thanks to Betty Gordy Schulz for finding this...

"Scots on the Chesapeake 1607-1830," compiled by David Dobson, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1992, page 57-58: GORDON, Daniel. Shipped 2 Nov. 1674, to Saint Mary's Co., MD on "Bachelor of Bristol." From MD State Archives, ESB.152

Further information on the Bachelor of Bristol may be found at a page listing what are aparently Irish immigrants who arrived on this ship.

Nov 1717 -- Somerset County Judgments 1709-1716

From the MD Genealogical Society Bulletin, Fall 1995 Vol. 36, No. 4, pp 646-647:

Liber ET#B, p. 418 - The Grand Jury presents Nicholas Toadvine of Stepney Parish and Mary Clifften of the same parish for unlawful keeping of company after being publicly forewarned. He is fined 600 lbs. of tobacco.
Note that the Nicholas Toadvine who came from Guernsey died around 1713, so this must have been his son, Nicholas Toadvine (Jr.). He was 39 (2 months shy of 40) years old in Nov 1717.

1744 Somerset Co. Tax List:

For some reason, there are no Toadvines listed in the 1757 tax list.

Marriage banns
were published to advertise a couple's intent to marry. I think this was so that anyone with an objection to the wedding (ie if one person was already married), would be notified.
Libers
are books of records in the County Court. They are identified by letters and/or numbers. If you were to decide you wanted a copy of, say, a land record or other record in the possession of the Clerk of the Court of Somerset County, they'd want to know this information so they could locate the record.
