Whitehaven. -- A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Whitehaven Church for Whitehaven native Earl D. Causey, who died of a heart attack at Loudon County Hospital in Virginia July 25, 1995. He was 76.
In 1975, Causey was recognized for his contribution as an engineer to the United Kingdom by becoming a member of the Order of the British Empire, an award presented by the chancellor of the Exchequer Denis Healey on behalf of her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. For an American citizen, this was a rare recognition of a foreign national's outstanding contribution to the construction and petroleum industries throughout the world.
Causey was the son of the late M. Dewey and Louise Toadvine Causey. He spent his early years in Whitehaven and received his earliest education in the two-room Whitehaven School until his family moved to Baltimore where he graduated from Baltimore POlytechnic School. He worked his way through a civil engineering degree from Cornell University in three years.
In World War II, he served as a lieutenant in the Seabees, the famed construction battalion of the U.S. Navy with extensive duty in the South Pacific, including Australia, New Guinea and several South Pacific Islands.
After that, he moved to Europe where he met and married, in March 1952, Heather Fleming Crawford, a graduate of the Royal Dick Veterinary College in Edinburgh.
Causey's construction experience for Lummus Construction Co., Stone and Webster Corp. and as an engineering consultant carried him around the world, including most of the United Kingdom, Indonesia, South Africa, Venezuela and the United States. But, he always returned to renew his roots on the Eastern Shore, especially Whitehaven.
Survivors include his children, James Causey of Richmond, Alexander Causey of Kancohe, Hawaii, and Robert Causey of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; two grandchildren, Neil and Heather; and a brother, Donald Causey of Parkton, MD.
Another son, Charles Toadvine Causey, died in a drowning accident in Italy at the age of 3.
His family will receive relatives and friends from 1 to 2 p.m. in Whitehaven.
Contributions may be made in memory of the deceased to Whitehaven Heritage Association Inc. c/o Carol Wills, treasurer, 2754 Whitehaven Road, Whitehaven, MD 21856.
