John Saylor Supercritical Video Transition John Saylor

The following is a video provided to me by Dr. Christopher Rayner of the University of Leeds. The video shows carbon dioxide in a high pressure vessel. The video is being obtained through a circular window in the vessel (there is also a window on the opposite side of the vessel which appears as a circle in the center of the frame) and shows an initial mixture of liquid and gas phase carbon dioxide. The meniscus is apparent. The temperature in the vessel is being increased. As time passes the system is getting closer and closer to the critical temperature. Eventually the critical temperature is exceeded and you can see the meniscus become blurry and then disappear. Enjoy!
